An Adventure Cycling Weekend in New York City: 40th Anniversary Party & NY Times Travel Show Recap

January 25, 2016

The ingredients: mild weather, more than 130 enthusiastic Adventure Cycling members, a cadre of passionate volunteers, several key staffers from Missoula, and thousands of members of the general public, all added up to a fun weekend of great food, camaraderie, prize giveaways, stories from Adventure Cycling’s past, and dreaming about bike travel adventures yet to come.

Adventure Cycling members arrive at the anniversary party and are greeted by Membership Director Julie Huck. The party location was at Dancing Classrooms, a non-profit dance studio in Manhattan.

New York-based adventurer and author Charles Scott gave an inspirational talk on
The Power of Bicycle Travel, and Adventure Cycling’s Executive Director Jim Sayer
updated everyone on the upcoming 40th anniversary events: National Bike Travel Weekend
(June 3–5), Montana Bicycle Celebration (July 15–17), and Bike Your Park Day (September 24).

Julie hands out door prizes to the crowd, while members chart their next bike travel adventures.

Raleigh America Inc. donated a Clubman Disc bike to be given to a lucky individual attendee of the anniversary party or travel show. Danny’s Bike Shop provided a spiffy display bike — shown here is assistant manager Manny and manager Sarah outside their Hell’s Kitchen store. On the right is tour leader and volunteer Sarah Burch along with Jim Sayer and the Adventure Cycling booth at the New York Times Travel Show.

The show attracted over 20,000 people and we had over 900 person-to-person contacts at our booth, thanks to our awesome volunteers and Adventure Cycling staff. On the left, volunteers Sarah Burch and Charles Scott explain Adventure Cycling’s mission, while volunteer Bob Shattuck (right) goes over the 2016 tour offerings– more than 100 tours for 2016!

More one-on-one sharing of bike travel passion by Jim Sayer and Bob Shattuck. Later, Jim makes a formal presentation and moderates a panel discussion titled Cycling Adventures: Find Your Next Bike Trip. Jim’s presentation capped off a very exciting and energizing weekend of events.

A big thanks to all of the volunteers and Adventure Cycling staff mentioned in this article, along with the following dedicated volunteers not shown: Lukas Herbert, Sheila Martin, John Ngai, Steven Powell, Laura Willis, Elliot Winick, and Susan Yuen, along with numerous staff members back at Adventure Cycling headquarters in Missoula.
