Over the last decade, I've gone from avoiding cities on my bike, to seeking them out. But cities can be daunting. There is so much to see in such a small area. I find it is good to have a focus. An informal survey found that "best bakeries" and "best brew pubs" rise to the top of prime destinations for the urban cyclist. When I visited Minneapolis, I discovered another wonderful category that could keep you entertained for a very long time.
Murals.
Minneapolis has murals everywhere. Local cyclists told me about some of their favorites, marking the locations on my Minneapolis bike map. It was a treasure hunt of sorts. It took me to places in the city I wouldn't have explored otherwise. It also heightened my awareness, as I was constantly on the lookout for hidden gems on side streets and back alleys. Below are some of my favorites. But if you want to see just how many murals Minneapolis has, you can visit photographer Mark Allan Peterson's flickr set, where he documents every outdoor mural in Minneapolis (there are over 500!).
What a great idea! Travel to every mural in Minneapolis by bike. And the added benefit? Just imagine how many bakeries and pubs you'll have to visit to fuel up.
