For the third year, Adventure Cycling Association’s Bike Travel Weekend coincides with American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® on the first weekend of June. No matter how you slice it, the first weekend of June is going to be adventure-packed. As you begin planning out your bike route, consider incorporating a section of paved rail trail or even remote single-track in honor of the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System.
Many of America’s greatest and most unique landscapes can only be seen while traveling along America’s remarkable trail system. The National Highway System includes over 164,000 miles of highway, yet more than 250,000 miles of trails stretch out across familiar landscapes and hidden wonders within the nationwide trail network. Many of these paths, ranging from rail trails to single-track, can be accessed on a bike overnight. America was given a gift in 1968 with the passage of the National Trails System Act–the creation and protection of some of Americans’ most beloved landscapes and places of recreation.
When you register a public bike overnight for Bike Travel Weekend that takes place on trails the trip will also be shared on the searchable event website for National Trails Day®. Across the country, thousands of individuals and organizations will offer local stewardship and recreational opportunities to celebrate America’s magnificent trails system. Share your bike overnight with people seeking similar adventures on National Trails Day®, or consider biking to one of the many stewardship events that will help improve thousands of miles of trail across the country.
This party is going to be BIG as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System, and we hope you will join Adventure Cycling Association and American Hiking Society on your favorite rail trail or dusty stretch of single-track or explore a new trail during the first weekend of June.

American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® is the only nationally coordinated event designed to unite all muscle-powered trail activities with the goal of connecting more people to trails. Every trail beckons adventure and has a story to share with any person willing to discover it, and American Hiking Society believes these trail experiences can improve the lives of every American. Each year, on the first Saturday of June, American Hiking Society and the trails community invite Americans of all ages to find their own adventure and discover their unique adventure at one of the thousands of events hosted throughout the country.
