Add The Big Island To Your Bike Touring Wish List

July 8, 2016

Amazing scenery, friendly people, fabulous campsites, great food, flowers, turtles, beaches, sunsets ... oh, and the cycling is awesome. Kat and I spent close to a month on The Big Island of Hawaii in January. You can read all about it in the July issue of Adventure Cyclist magazine.

Below are just a few of the images not included in the magazine feature. May they inspire you to pedal around this wonderland. You can venture out on your own, like we did, or you can sign up for one of Adventure Cycling’s self-contained tours of Hawaii. There’s a waiting list for the one leaving this fall, but I’ve been told from a reliable source that there are two trips planned for 2017, April 24–May 7 and Oct 23–Nov 3. You can peruse all of the Adventure Cycling tours here.

Gear down. There’s a lot of climbing to be done ... but just as much coasting.
Rainbows aren’t guaranteed, but plentiful!

I really enjoyed reading the article by Willie about riding in Hawai'i. My husband, Mark, and I have ridden there during several trips, and did a 10 day ride around the Big Island in 2012. I (finally) finished a blog based on my notes, and have posted it at the URL above-(I couldn't fit the http:// in the form). As he notes above, there are so many things to love about Hawai'i, and cycling there was wonderful!

We've enjoyed reading Willie's adventures in Adventure Cycling for years, and I was tickled to see him and Kat get to my favorite place. I'd love to get Willie's thoughts on our trip too.
