Wilmington, North Carolina, has heavy recreational traffic along the beach south to Fort Fisher, on the bank of the Cape Fear River. At Shallotte, the terrain is essentially flat and the route heads to the coast through Myrtle Beach and surrounding cities which cater to tourists. In Charleston, there are several bike paths used to navigate the city. The section ends in Okatie, South Carolina, a suburban community located west of Hilton Head Island.
