Exploring USBR 21 in Georgia

May 22, 2018

The U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) is more than a collection of roads; it’s also a collection of unique bike travel experiences. We’re highlighting one of the many experiences you’ll find on a U.S. Bicycle Route, thanks to BikeTours.com and Visit Bentonville/Bike Bentonville.

Forty-five miles outside of Atlanta, Georgia, the century-old Brushy Mountain Tunnel beckons. Surrounded by forest and fields, rumor has it the tunnel stays a cool 67 degrees all summer long! You’ll find it on the Silver Comet Trail, part of U.S. Bicycle Route 21 in Northwest Georgia.

Originally designated in 2015, U.S. Bicycle Route 21 (USBR 21) connects metro Atlanta to the Tennessee border at Chattanooga. One day, USBR 21 will extend north to Ohio and connect into several other U.S. Bicycle Routes — but you don’t need to wait to ride these quiet country roads or the car-free Silver Comet Trail.

For a short North Georgia bike tour, grab your friends and ride out from downtown Atlanta. USBR 21 starts from the MARTA station on Peachtree Street, which means you can leave the car at home. Or shorten the ride and bring your kids for a family-friendly day trip. You’ll find several trailheads along the Silver Comet Trail, including the Coot’s Lake Beach Trailhead, a mere 2.6 miles from the tunnel.

Since 2005, Adventure Cycling has been proud to shepherd the growth of the U.S. Bicycle Route System, which will connect thousands of experiences like the Brushy Mountain Tunnel. If you don’t live in Georgia or along one of the 12,000 miles of currently designated U.S. Bicycle Routes (USBRs), don’t worry, more USBRs are being developed every day. Help us grow the network — and connect you to more unique bike travel experiences — by donating today.
