Important Leadership Update

Feb 3rd, 2026

From the Executive Director

Dear Adventure Cycling members,

I am writing to share that I will be stepping down from my role as Executive Director of Adventure Cycling Association at the end of February.

This decision was not made lightly. I accepted this role because I believe deeply in Adventure Cycling’s mission and in the importance of its work to advance cycling, exploration, and advocacy. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and for the dedication of the staff, volunteers, and board members who continue to support the organization during a complex and demanding period.

After thoughtful reflection, I have concluded that this is the appropriate moment for me to step aside. The scope, pace, and conditions facing the organization at this time require different leadership to guide Adventure Cycling through its next chapter. This decision was my own and does not reflect the performance, commitment, or good faith efforts of the staff or the board.

I care deeply about the staff and respect the resilience, professionalism, and commitment they bring to this work. I also recognize and appreciate the significant time and energy our volunteer board members contribute on behalf of Adventure Cycling and its members.

I will continue to support a smooth and responsible transition through the end of my tenure to help ensure continuity for the organization.

As Adventure Cycling celebrates its 50th anniversary, the organization enters an important period of transition, and I am grateful to the members who continue to invest their care, support, and energy in its future.

Thank you for your engagement, your passion, and your continued support of Adventure Cycling Association.

With respect,

Andy Williamson

From the Board Chair

Dear Adventure Cycling members,

As Andy shared in his message, he has made the difficult decision to step down as Executive Director at the end of February. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank Andy for his service and for approaching this transition with integrity and care for the organization.

The board is genuinely saddened by Andy’s departure. We believed — and continue to believe — that he brought the right qualities and intentions to lead ACA, and we regret that the circumstances of this moment made it difficult for that leadership to fully take hold.

When the board hired Andy just four months ago, we did so with confidence in both the search process and the candidate, and with clear expectations around strengthening member relationships and charting a sustainable future for the organization. We understood ACA to be entering a period of significant challenge and opportunity, one that called for innovation, operational leadership, and change.

What the board is coming to understand more fully is that this moment requires greater clarity around governance and organizational identity, as well as the specific leadership role needed to support member-centered work and community-based fundraising. The board has a responsibility to be especially clear about that role before moving forward. Rather than rushing into a search, we are taking time to define the interim leadership needs carefully and thoughtfully.

What happens next:

Adventure Cycling’s work continues with focus and momentum. Our staff team is strong, deeply committed, and fully prepared to carry forward ACA’s work. The 2026 workplan includes new and updated routes, advocacy initiatives with partners, and a stellar lineup of 2026 guided tours.

As we celebrate Adventure Cycling’s 50th anniversary year, the board is taking a thoughtful and deliberate approach to this leadership transition. Within the next two to three weeks, we will announce interim leadership arrangements and share more about our process and timeline for determining the organization’s longer-term leadership needs.

We know this news comes during a period of significant change and recognize that uncertainty can be difficult. The board is committed to transparent, regular communications as we move forward, and we will continue to keep members informed throughout this process.

Thank you for your continued investment in Adventure Cycling’s mission and future.

Sincerely,

Flavia Chen
