John was a man of many interests. Most involved adventure and testing his endurance; he also studied American history, especially Lewis and Clark. Running marathons, mountain climbing, off-the-grid hiking, camping, canoeing, hunting, and fishing were in his soul. John’s most epic life adventures began after he retired.
At 62 he started riding a bicycle, igniting a passion that lasted to the end. Casual rides were not John’s style. He daily rode his bicycle 60 miles or more. He traversed the US coast-to-coast at least 5 times. His longest ride was a 5-month, 4,700-mile adventure through the Yukon and ending in Anchorage, Alaska. He was 80 by the time of his final bicycle adventure.
