Summary: This ride in Thailand, Laos, and China covered an incredible variety of terrain, climate, and cultures from Thailand's steamy Bangkok to China's Himalayan glaciers.; Self-Planned

Health Issues: none

Motivation: A cycle ride from tropical Bangkok to icy Himalayan peaks seemed too good to be true--but it was!

Most Challenging Aspect:Snowstorms in the Himalaya when I was there in April. If I could have come a month later in May I would have experienced warmer weather and flower-filled meadows.

Favorite Experience: Cycling above Deqin amongst the ice mountains.

Least Favorite: A long descent in a snowstorm to Yajiang turned into an ordeal of bitter cold. I looked like Frosty the Snowman. Gears froze and I later found that the icing conditions had forced water into pedal and front hub bearings, ruining them with rust.

Tips: Try to get a 60- or 90-day Chinese visa, often available on request. Otherwise you can usually obtain extensions in major cities.
