ACA Helped Me: Yes

Rider: Karla Hart; 51 years old, Non-Member UNITED STATES

Summary: I solo toured Seattle to Crescent City jumped for reasons of time by vehicle to Half Moon Bay and cycled on to San Luis Obispo.; Self-Planned

How did ACA Help? Adventure Cycling as Bikecentennial introduced me to bicycle touring. I used Adventure Cycling maps, supplemented with other resources.

Health Issues: None beyond picking up a cold the last leg.

Motivation: It's all downhill with a tailwind! Okay, not really but it seemed a good solo route for a shakedown on the experience and was relatively easy for start/finish logistics with Amtrak.

Most Challenging Aspect:I was torn between doing distance to make the route and slowing down to experience more. I started with longer days (average 50-55 miles) and discovered 35-40 miles a day left me time for enjoying people and places enroute and camping with shorter fall days.

Favorite Experience: The Big Sur Coast was spectacular and road construction lumped traffic so you could have the lane without cars for 15-30 minutes at a time to dream of major cycling routes without any cars.

Least Favorite: Traffic.

Tips: Prepare for lots of dense fog and for heat if touring in early fall.

Date Entered: Jun, 2016
