Summary: First transamerica trip going from west to east, averaging approx 90 mi/day. We were the first to arrive at most bikeinns - trailblazers!; Self-Planned

How did ACA Help? maps, leaders, primitive (!) supplies, bikeinns (almost ready)

Health Issues: Excessive sun exposure back in the days before there was good sunblock with high SPF. A doctor prescribed cortisone cream. Our chamois cream became a popular item to loan to fellow riders in the group.

Motivation: Sense of adventure, self-reliance, unique opportunity to be part of history, love of bicycling.

Most Challenging Aspect:Being on a tandem, lots of miles every day, tight budget

Favorite Experience: Really long downhills going as fast as possible. Also, insane tailwinds when trying to beat a tornado into a small town in Kansas - we made it!

Least Favorite: Horrible mosquitoes, unceasing wind and hostile locals in Jeffrey City, Wyoming.

Tips: Try out all your gear on long rides before the big one and pack as little as possible. I'm glad we camped - we ended up pitching a tent in a matter of seconds with practice. I'll never forget the trip - certainly am proud to have been a part of it.
