This group of seventh graders (and their three chaperones), are from the Palm Desert Charter Middle School in Palm Desert, California. They came to Montana to do a ‘wheels-on’ study of Lewis and Clark. The ride took them from Missoula to Whitehall.
The students tested their leadership and team building skills as they confronted the physical and mental challenges of the trip. They were responsible for making and breaking camp, planning and cooking meals, reading the journals of Lewis and Clark, and keeping their own journals. They had rain and hail, witnessed a buffalo stampede, crossed the continental divide at 7,300 feet, and ended the trip with a whitewater raft trip on the Gallatin River, symbolizing the many adventures of the group’s ride.
