Dolly Hirata visited our office back in 1983. She was one of a group of four recumbent riders, the first recumbents on tour to come our way. The California to Colorado tour was for Dolly the culmination of a five-year effort to regain her health.
"I was so out of shape that I couldn't walk across a parking lot and talk at the same time. Finally, I decided that enough was enough."
She began with weight reduction, got into weight training and running. Then she discovered cycling,
"I hated running," and was introduced to the recumbent. "I felt safer doing fast descents from the passes. We experienced none of the saddle soreness, backaches, and numbness other riders complained of. I am so convinced that a recumbent bicycle is the way to go that I sold my other bike."
