My partner, Karen, and I, pedaled our way from the beginning terminal of the Katy Trail, Machens, to the trailhead of Birkenheim, a mere 63 miles longer. Along the way, we passed a ginormous toad in the center of the trail, a large hawk breezed over our heads and, of course, the seasonal outcropping of occasional snakes. The weather was very conducive to our quest--temperatures in the 70's by mid-day and cloudy, but Karen and I pedaled on through trailhead after trailhead to finally arrive at Birkenheim eight hours later!!!
There are no fees involved when riding the Katy. Karen and I carried our own snacks and lunch, but there are plenty of commercial businesses along the way that would be happy to have you as a customer. The Katy is level with only slight elevation climbs of 100 or so feet. Being a chat based path, there was plenty of dust spewed upon us from our bikes.
