Humpday Giveaways and Mid-Month Update

May 15, 2013

So far, U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) supporters have contributed $72,971 to build the U.S. Bicycle Route System and help meet the $100,000 campaign goal. Thank you so much to all who donated to help us meet the $35,000 initial match and then subsequent match challenges from Planet Bike and BikeFlights.

Today, TeamEstrogen.com is rallying their support for the U.S. Bicycle Route System by offering a match challenge of $1,000. In addition to your donation being matched by TeamEstrogen.com, you can win a set of racks (front and back) from Old Man Mountain, a retail value of $329.98. Donate today to meet the match and win!

Today's sponsor, TeamEstrogen.com, is the leading online retailer of women’s bicycling and triathlon apparel. This year they are celebrating 15 years of bringing well-fitting, stylish, functional apparel to women who want to run, ride, and swim in comfort. TeamEstrogen.com was founded on the belief that every woman deserves apparel that fits and flatters, so President Susan Otcenas and her team have made it one of their primary goals to carry the broadest selection of sizes available. Be she a size 00 or a size 24, she will find clothing at TeamEstrogen.com that allows her to pursue her chosen sport.

When asked about TeamEstrogen.com’s support of the USBRS, Susan says, “Just as every woman deserves to ride a bike in comfort, so too should she be able to ride her bike on roads that are safe, convenient, and accessible. Survey after survey shows that more women want to ride their bikes more often. But concerns about lack of convenient and accessible infrastructure are barriers for too many people. Through our contributions to the USBRS, as well as the many other contributions we make to other bicycling advocacy organizations around the country, we hope to help support changes that will break down these barriers.”

When asked what she’s excited about in the cycling world right now, Susan shares:

“I am excited to see more women of size on bicycles. I love going to event rides and seeing the wide array of people of all shapes and sizes using bicycles as a means to exercise and recreate.

"I serve on the Citizen's Advisory Committee for our region's Transportation System Plan Update. I've been cautiously encouraged by what I see as a dedicated effort to work active transportation initiatives into all levels of the region's transportation plan.

"In the next five years, I'd like to see a continued trend towards bicycling for transportation becoming more "mainstream." Bicycling should not be seen as "alternative" transportation, but instead as one choice amongst many — auto, bicycle, public transportation, walking, etc — that a person wanting to get from point A to point B can make. Right now, there are simply too many places where motorized vehicles are the only practical option. We need to change that.

"I'd like to see reinstatement of Safe Routes to School funding that was recently cut at the federal level. This funding is critical to bicycle safety education at the grade school level. If we don't teach our young people how to ride bicycles, where will our next generation of adult bicyclists come from?”

Susan asks some great questions, and we are very happy to count TeamEstrogen.com as a USBRS Business Sponsor. Make a donation now to meet the $1,000 match challenge offered by TeamEstrogen.com and win a set of racks from Old Man Mountain.
