What about his parents? That is the most frequently asked question I get when I talk about Zeke Gerwein. And I've talked about him a lot, since writing two columns and a feature about this incredible young man for Adventure Cyclist magazine (Part 1, 2, and 3).
That first question was always followed by others: How can his parents let him be so independent and adventurous at such a young age? Aren't they worried? Isn't is dangerous?
The questions kept coming. So I sat down and had conversations with Zeke's parents, Joel and Katya Gerwein. What they shared with me, in my opinion, is not only the essence of amazing parenting, but the key to living an adventuruous life.
The audio excerpt of those conversations is below. Give it a listen. It is well worth your time.

I love having cycling news to read, so is it possible that you can post a transcript of this conversation that you had with the wonderful parents who allowed this kid a taste of independence and experience the adventure we all love.
thanks.
wonderful parenting - let's not raise our kids in fear, but be willing to let them learn from taking good risks. Our daughter took a gap year b/t high school and college to thru hike the Appalachian Trail...and we couldn't have been more happy to support her spirit of adventure.
What a great interview - I'm glad I listened. Ride on, Zeke!
Thanks for sharing your conversation with Joel and Katya. What a great way to let your child have the freedom to grow and challenge himself in responsible ways. Every child should be so lucky to have parents like the Gerweins!
Thanks mom/dad.
