Did you ride Bikecentennial '76? Have you ridden the TransAm? Do you love bike travel? How would you like to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Adventure Cycling and the TransAm in 2016? Reunions, rides, special publications, and whatever else you come up with will be considered. Please send your feedback to 40years@adventurecycling.org or leave a comment below!
For inspiration, revisit the origins of Adventure Cycling as told by former Adventure Cyclist editor Dan D'Ambrosio in this article, "Bikecentennial: Summer of 1976."
I look forward to hearing your ideas!

The summer of 1976 may have been the best of my life. After riding the route in '76 I began a lifetime of bike touring. In addition to other transcontinental trips and a number of shorter tours (including the reunion in 2006), I did the Transamerica trail again a few years ago. This might be just what it takes to get me geared up for round three!

2016 will be amazing! Looking forward to it with immense enthusiasm.
Can't wait, like someone else said I think if you ask, you could pull a number of helpers. Count me in!
Just watched the video of the Libby-Whitefish section of Northern Tier. Very nice. Still hoping to see an historical presentation on Trans-Am '76 and where the organization has gone since. Name change, faces of riders over the years, new building going up, changes in signage along the routes are what I envision. Would be willing to show this to community groups on own time and expense (as probably would most '76'ers), and since we '76ers are in our 50/60/70's, no time to lose! What is ACA doing along this line???
A reunion ride for us original 76'ers would be great fun...keeping in mind we are 40 years older.
And how many of you Peanut Butter Pedaler's in Lloyd Sumner's camping group pictured in the bike wheel photo at the top of the blog are still around and biking? I am at 11:00. The Independent rider that you adopted and leap-frogged across the US with!
It was nice of Bill Foreman (who we called "Ranger Rick" during our half-crossing in '76) to mention me, and re-riding the trail would be a blast, but I'd really like to see some new signs along the route and a DVD of our (Adventure Cyclists') exploits then, and since.
I have a couple of kids, 15 and 17 that have been looking forward to this for 10 years, I will be 60, raring to go!
Willing to aid in the organization as well!
I will be 70 in 2106 and ready to do the trail again. Send me the details. A member of our '76 group, John Ludway, has been in the early stages of a 40th reunion already, so we are primed for it. I keep thinking of re-riding the trail, and a reunion will get me out there to do it.
Really interested in Transamerica trail in 2016, would be great if it could have a climate change awareness as part of its mission, would love to see a cast of thousands, just like 76. Please update with info asap. I would be willing to aid in organization.
Hi Doug,
We're not sure yet which activities will be part of the 40th celebration, or the size of the groups. We will keep you posted!
What will be the group size and the number of groups that will be supported by Adventure Cycling Association?
