Meet at 13 Canal Place at the Cumberland Visitor Center in Maryland at 10 AM. Free parking is available on Howard Street next to the Footers Dye Works Building across from the Canal Place shops. Begin the bike ride at the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park terminus and engage in the historical structures along an 18 mile, round-trip, journey. Ride on the towpath that mules walked on long ago to tow the canal boats back and forth to deliver coal, produce, lumbar, cement, stone, and other cargo.
Towpath is course gravel, therefore, road bikes are not recommended and advise a minimum tire width of 35 mm. The trail is mostly flat, but can be muddy in some areas. Overall, the trail equates to a medium level of difficulty. Bikes can be rented at Cumberland Trail Connection Bike Shop.
