Ride Description

Bandon Bicycle Works is proud to take part in the Adventure Cycling Association's Bike Travel Weekend 2022!

We invite you to join us on The Wild Man of Nugget Tom's Lost Mine Bikepacking Weekend. The full route will start/ end in the rural Southern Oregon Coast town of Langlois. Parking is available at the Langlois Lions Club(48135 Floras Lake Loop, Langlois, OR 97450).

Leaving the Langlois Lions Club at 10am, the route will take us South on the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route (HWY101) through the wooded farmlands of Langlois and Sixes Oregon. We will head east along the Sixes River into Bigfoot country, the ride will turn to gravel forest service roads leading to the Lost Mine of Nugget Tom trail, dropping us into Star Gulch near the headwaters of the Sixes River where we will set up camp along the South Fork of the Sixes River. The area has multiple old mining cabins and a cemetery along with a long history of Sasquatch sightings/stories.

Waking up along the Sixes River(hopefully without any Bigfoot encounters) we kick the day off with a big climb out of camp back up to the ridge top. We will enjoy big climbs and long descents with great views of both Grassy Knob and Copper Salmon Wilderness areas before dropping into the Elk River. After a short stretch back on pavement we will begin the beautiful climb up to Laird lake where we will set up camp on our final night. Laird Lake has a small campground and Vault toilets. The lake is full of Trout so bring your fishing rod.

After enjoying breakfast next to the lake we will continue up the hill from Laird lake making our way along gravel roads \ through the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. With a long descent back to the Elk River where the pavement begins. We will ride along Elk River Road taking a lunch stop at the Elk River Hatchery before making the last push up the Pacific Coast Route back to Langlois.

Anyone looking to shorten the ride can join in for Saturday night by meeting at Laird Lake via Elk River Road from Hwy 101, you can park at the Langlois Lions Club or find a parking spot closer at your discretion. You can also make it a fun day ride by parking at the Elk River Hatchery on Elk River Road and ride up along the Elk river making a right on NF-5325 up to Laird Lake( Route: )

-This is a back country ride, be prepared! Bring enough food/water, proper clothing and sleeping gear. Water filters are highly recommended. There will be no cell service for most of this ride and no stores. There is a market in Langlois for last minute supplies before the ride starts.
