Developed over 20 years ago, at that time it was a quantum leap in performance. The first high-quality tire suitable for reliable touring as well as everyday use. These characteristics quickly made it popular and today it is still Europe’s most ridden touring tire. In the newest version with KevlarGuard and Allround tread compound it can easily fulfill everything that is expected of a Marathon tire: effective puncture protection, durability and excellent handling characteristics. Wire bead.
**Note: Schwalbe labels the 29 x 2.0 tire as "28 x 2.0 Inch" (due to European sizing standards). This is actually the same size as "29 x 2.0 Inch" and "700c x 50mm" (50-622 ISO)**
Replaced old mountain bike tires on my training bike with these. They roll well. Just yesterday I ran out of pavement and onto a gravel road and they felt stable. I was hoping to roll through some unpaved road with them. Not until I encountered some wet concrete like mud did these "get stuck in the mud".

Great tires. Very thorn resistant. Your ordering process is fantastic as was your delivery. Thank you.

I have only had this tire a short time, but it has been very good so far. Rides and handles well on both pavement and dirt.

i like these tires a lot. they seem to roll easily and i think the handling and slow speed cornering around town are very good.
Initial Touring Tire

Switched out my mountain bike tires for the Schwalbe Marathon HS420. Being a newbie, the tire felt tight to put back on the rim, a spoon fixed this. After completing a cycle tour this past week, I feel comfortable saying these tires held up very well in extremely wet conditions. Traction was great even on slick asphalt and paint. They went effortlessly through gravel without wobbles. Deeper mud puddles may be a bit of a problem, but really should you be riding through it? During the whole week, I only had to pump them up one time, and that was only 5 psi. My kit weighed a lot and these tires certainly stood the test.

Interesting. I also bought a pair of these for a cross country trip on my Trek 520 in 2013. I wanted a durable tire that could handle occasional gravel roads and shoulders of cracked pavement. These fit the bill. No matter the road surface, wet or dry, I feel secure riding on these tires.

I bought two of these tires for my Trek 520 for a coast to coast tour in June of 2013. I had one flat on the rear, not the tires fault. A really sharp peace of glass worked itself into the tire. Over the 4200 mile trip the thread is only half worn and the tires really held up great. I am sold on these tires and will buy them again.

We have ridden a lot in Europe and Schwalbe seems to be the common tire. Bought a set for our tandem. Seem like really well made tires. Have so far only used off road (50 miles), and could use a wider tire, but we mostly ride on road, and I think they will be very comfortable.
Best touring tire

This is the best touring tire I have owned in over 30 years of touring. It is light, fast and very durable. My touring often takes me of the well traveled roads to explore places you just can't get to without getting on gravel and dirt; these tires perform amazingly well.

After a 50-mile maiden voyage on mostly hilly gravel roads and blacktop, I am so far very happy with these tires. Very stable and smooth in corners. Good traction on gravel -- these tires seem to plow through loose gravel rather than bounce around on top of it. Bonus: on gravel they have a cushiony ride similar to bigger-volume mtn bike tires.
Four stars instead of five because they are heavy tires, especially when paired with the thorn-resistant tubes. It takes a little extra torque to get things rolling, but once up to speed, I don't feel that I have to slow down for much.
Nice riding, easy to install.

I switched to these tires from Continental Touring Plus tires. The Conti's were VERY hard to install on my rims (700x28 Matrox Vapor), including 3 pinched tubes and a snapped tire iron. These Schwalbe tires are a touch bigger and install much easier. They seem to be made of a more supple material than the Conti's and give a much smoother ride. The Conti's were unstable on my bike (Trek 520) in any high speed cornering - I checked twice to make sure rotation was correct. The Schwalbe Marathons are stable and track very true - no shimmy or rough feeling at all in corners. Also, I had very uneven wear on the Conti's front vs. rear, but it's too early to tell with the Schwalbe. So far i am very impressed and happy with them.

Just finished a week long tour through BC and WA with the 28's on a Santana Tandem. Rode everything from highway to rough gravel trails, and not a problem. Had good confidence on whatever surface I was on for puncture resistance. Not as stick as say a Conti which would be based on the aggressive tread pattern. Not light, and tough to squeeze into the airline case, but worth it

Loved my first set so much, bought another. The first set lasted over 7000 miles with very few flats but succumbed this year to all the glass on the Major Taylor Trail.

I just bought my third set of the marathons to replace my 2nd set with over 12000 miles including a 4000 mi. Northern Tier ride in 09.and no flats. I do use a liner just incase. Great tires.
Hamish Blanch on 5/22/11
fitted one of these tires onto the rear of my bike 8,000km into an 11,00km tour, Northern Tier, East Coast 2010.Had several (6) annoying punctures, mostly caused by tiny fragments of wire presumably from broken up steel belted truck/car tires finding their way through causing slow leaks. "Marathon plus" a better option but could not source at replacement time..(my wife had these front/rear for 11,000km and nil punctures!). Marathon Supreme (I have not used them)..may be a better option.
so far so good
A customer from phila, pa on 7/2/09
only ridden these tires about 500 miles or so but several of them in pretty gritty urban road conditions. These tires are plenty tough, no flats and they hold their air over a long period of time. The refelective side walls work exceptionally well at night.
john ruggini on 6/11/09
only have a 100 or so miles on but they seem to be working out very well and I am pleased. Hope you continue to offer items best suited for tourist and communters. thanks
