Four young adults will win new gear and take an Adventure Cycling educational course in exchange for promoting bicycle travel.
MISSOULA, MONT., November 7— Adventure Cycling Association is now accepting applications for the fifth-annual Greg Siple Award for Young Adult Bicycle Travel. Young adults, aged 18 to 30 years old, will take an Adventure Cycling educational course, win bike-travel gear, and more — in exchange for doing a unique outreach project that promotes bicycle travel.
The Greg Siple Award for Young Adult Bicycle Travel was developed in response to Adventure Cycling members’ overwhelming enthusiasm and commitment to Adventure Cycling’s mission to inspire and empower people of all ages to travel by bicycle.
“The Intro to Road Touring course gave me the resources to bridge a gap between something I recognized I was interested in and gaining firsthand experience,” shared 2017 Greg Siple Award winner Sara Chars of Minneapolis. “This translates to the kind of real-world knowledge you want to share with others.”
Two types of awards will be offered based on experience level — Intro to Bike Travel and Outdoor Leadership. Both are designed to support young adults with varying levels of experience and cover the cost of attending an Adventure Cycling educational course. Upon completion, four recipients, two in each category, will take what they’ve learned and apply it to an outreach project to promote bicycle travel.
The Intro to Bike Travel award is for those who dream of going on a self-supported bicycle tour but aren’t quite ready to hit the road. Once outfitted with a new touring bicycle from REI, equipped with Arkel panniers, camping gear from Big Agnes, and ABUS bike locks, the two winners will attend an Adventure Cycling Intro to Road Touring course — with their bike shipment covered by BikeFlights.com and a $400 travel stipend.
The Outdoor Leadership award is for those who have bike travel experience and want to get more involved in outdoor leadership. This award is for cyclists interested in developing their leadership skills by attending Adventure Cycling’s Leadership Training Course. The winners will receive a $400 travel stipend, bike shipment to and from their course, ABUS bike locks, and a $100 Cyclosource gift certificate to refresh their gear. They will also have the opportunity to take an additional Adventure Cycling self-contained tour (no travel stipend).
The application closes on December 31, 2017 (midnight, EST). Additional information and applications are available at adventurecycling.org/gregsipleaward.
