Adventure Cyclist Magazine Lead Designer

Adventure Cycling Association seeks a creative, well-organized, and detail-oriented person to fill the role of Lead Designer for Adventure Cyclist magazine. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced talent with initiative to join Adventure Cycling. The ideal candidate will be a team player who works well in a deadline-driven environment. The candidate will ideally have previous experience in magazine layout and graphic design as well as an enthusiasm for cycling and bicycle travel. The position is based at Adventure Cycling’s headquarters in beautiful and bike-friendly Missoula, Montana.

General Summary:

The Lead Designer for Adventure Cyclist will collaborate directly with the Editor-in-Chief and other staff on the magazine’s layout, design, and story management, making it vibrant, fresh and smart for a wide variety of readers, primarily in North America but also overseas. Adventure Cyclist is one of the largest circulation cycling magazines in North America and the only one dedicated to bicycle travel. The magazine has developed a reputation for long form travel narratives, beautiful images, insightful technical coverage, and inspiring essays. We work with dozens of talented contributors from all over the world in each volume.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Produce nine print issues annually of Adventure Cyclist, plus special issues, as well as all digital, electronic, and web-based versions of the magazine and magazine content under strict deadlines.
  • Conceptualize and implement visual design and content to create strong, cohesive, visual and typographical layout solutions for multi-page magazines through all stages of production with careful attention to detail and ownership over work.
  • Be detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Select and process strong images to best accompany features, columns, departments, and all components of Adventure Cyclist.
  • Maintain a database of illustrators and other visual artists and coordinate with them to produce artwork as needed to accompany content.
  • Maintain the print and digital Adventure Cyclist publications archives
  • When necessary, be able to contribute to the production of other Adventure Cycling design projects and publications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Design — Must have exceptional publication design and typographic skills, and a knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of multi-page print and digital publications.
  • Communications and Collaboration — Must be a skillful listener and embrace teamwork while displaying an ability to work under pressure and quickly adapt to changes in design direction based on interaction with senior editorial and art staff.
  • Computers and Programs — Knowledge of Macintosh Operating Systems and in-depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, especially InDesign and Photoshop. Knowledge of and experience with content management systems such as MURA and Wordpress, and basic HTML.
  • Must be able to learn and adapt to new technology, particularly pertaining to digital editions.

Education and Experience

At least a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design from four-year art/design institution is required. Otherwise at least four years related experience and/or training or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Of course, attention will be paid to candidate’s bicycling experience and their ability to bring humor and good spirits to the job and the workplace.

The position will be competitively compensated in the Northern Rockies region.
