Bikerversary Buffalo Soldier Bikepacking Trip!

Join Devin Cowens of Radical Adventure Riders Atlanta (RAR ATL) and Erick Cedeño of Bicycle Nomad/Adventure Cycling Association for a Bikerversary Buffalo Soldier Bikecamping Trip to Arabia Mountain.

This trip uplifts, honors and celebrates the 25th Infantry, a racially-segregated Black infantry known as Buffalo Soldiers. The term refers to Black soldiers who served west of the Mississippi River in regiments initially formed in 1866, after the end of the Civil War. They were assigned to assess bicycles as military transportation on the frontier at the end of the nineteenth century. Essentially, the soldiers were testing the use of bicycles in the military, a practice more common in geographically smaller countries such as France and Germany.

On June 14 , 1897, these Black soldiers began a military mission to ride their bicycles 1,900 miles, from Fort Missoula, Montana to St. Louis. Peep this, they were fully loaded and fixed with no support vehicle.

This beginner friendly 22 miles each way Bikepacking trip takes place on Thursday, May 12, 2022. It serves as the pregame to Bikerversary weekend which starts on Friday May 13, 2022.

We are inviting BIPOC bikepackers to participate and sign up before May 6. You must RSVP HERE!
