Adventure Cycling's strategic plan (pdf/132k) outlines our three major campaigns -- and our goals for these campaigns -- through 2012. Below (in bold) are our current campaigns, followed by a listing of current projects for each campaign:
Creating bike routes for the nation
- We are working to establish an official U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS), in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation, national and state agencies, and other non-profit organizations.
- In January 2012, we will finish up work on the new Detroit Alternate for our Underground Railroad Bicycle Route.
- In 2012, we will embark on route research for the Adventure Cycling Route Network's next long-distance route: Bicycle Route 66.
- We are in the process of converting our maps to GIS (Geographic Information System). This conversion process will take several years and will be ongoing as the maps are updated. All new maps will be created in GIS. The GIS process will allow us to add some
new features to the maps including shaded relief. It will also facilitate
faster and more accurate updates, along with keeping our Routes and Mapping Department up-to-date with the latest technologies in cartography.
Getting more people traveling by bicycle
Supporting bicycle communities
- We're continuing our involvement with the America Bikes coalition.
- Our ongoing national bicycle-travel awards program is going strong.
- We're working to secure safer bicycle-travel conditions in the U.S., including advocating for the appropriate application of rumble strips.
- We're working to develop resources to publicize and implement the official U.S. Bicycle Route System.
