To travel by bicycle is
a humble, nonagressive
way to get close to people.
It is a way of saying we
are passing through with
no thought of invasion or
conquest, only the simple
will to share a part
of the war.
- Claude Herve

Inspiration and Resource
INSPIRATION
Have a dream to ride a bike across your state, across the country, or around the world? We'll help you make it happen. Adventure Cycling has been changing people's lives since 1976, when more than 4,000 cyclists joined us for all or part of a ride across America celebrating our nation's bicentennial. We know what it takes to live the dream -- and we'll be happy to show you the way.

Building on the original TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, created for that celebration in '76, we continue to expand our National Bicycle Route Network, now totaling 38,158 miles of North American back roads and mountain trails.

Adventure Cycling Association is committed to inspiring cyclists to live their dreams. Our own lives have changed because of trips we've made, and we want you to have the same experience. We've put many people on the road already, where they've found confidence and strength in dealing with whatever nature dishes out. Perhaps more importantly, they've found friendship and generosity in the warm welcome that people across the nation extend to cyclists, offering a family dinner or a place to pitch a tent.

RESOURCE
Route development is the heart and soul of what we do. And the heart and soul of route development is research. Our experienced field team finds the best roads in America for cycling, tapping into the local knowledge of members, clubs, bike shops, and public officials around the nation. Once the routes have been researched, the maps are carefully drawn on computers by the Routes and Mapping Department, and readied for printing. Our Tours Department uses the routes we have created to provide guided tours for members, while also providing updates and feedback to Routes and Mapping.
