Happy Club Week!

For the rest of this week, clubs throughout the country have sponsored match challenges to raise money for the U.S. Bicycle Route System and raise awareness of the project to their members and supporters. Our first club sponsor is one of the largest bicycle clubs in the U.S., the Cascade Bicycle Club! Cascade is presenting us with a two-day, $1,000 match, so please donate today to help us meet the challenge!

Adventure Cycling leads do-it-yourself Florida trips
It was the beginning of Adventure Cycling's Introduction to Road Touring, a measly 18 miles round trip to get groceries and test out our bikes. It was also, I suppose, an opportunity for our tour leaders to assess the weakest links. Encouraging shouts lost on the wind, California girls Lori and Pam blew by me as if I were standing still. Louisville Phil had a big custom-made trailer about as unwieldy as hauling a Prius, but he seemed plucky. Then there was Tropicana Jim from Bradenton, not young, but an elegant athlete with a creamy-leather Brooks saddle and perfectly matched custom fenders. Tony and Denise from Atlanta? Warm and enthusiastic, they'd hiked and biked the length of the grueling El Camino de Santiago in Spain. Twice.

Sea to Shining Sea: The route

Tours of a Lifetime
The golden age of exploration continues: 125 years after the birth of National Geographic, after Hiram Bingham rediscovered Machu Picchu, after Jane Goodall observed that chimps fashioned their own tools, after Spencer Wells used genetic data to trace the human family tree, explorers continue to extend the frontiers of geography and science. Travelers have joined the movement, pushing beyond the boundaries of mainstream tourism, exploring the planet as never before. To commemorate the occasion, we scoured the globe for the guided trips that best embody this inquisitive spirit for Traveler's eighth annual "50 Tours of a Lifetime." Ready? Set? Explore.
