The bicycle is perfectly
suited to exploring the
landscapes and
mindscapes of historical
figures and events.
The pace of the
bicycle permits
travelers to appreciate
their surroundings
and brings them closer
to the pace at which
Americans moved prior
to the advent of
motorized transportation.

Underground Railroad Bicycle Route
How to Get Involved

Adventure Cycling, our partners at the Center for Minority Health, and our Advisory Board members are pleased to announce that there are a number of ways that you can be involved with the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route (UGRR).

  • Planning your own adventure using our maps and resources.
  • Visit the UGRR Forum, created specifically for this route. You can join the forum and share up-coming events, history, route information, or other related topics or just enjoy what others are saying.
  • Share your experience: Register Your Ride. This is a great place to review other Adventure Cyclists' experiences on the route to freedom.
  • Display a window decal to indicate that cyclists will find a welcome environment in your establishment.
  • Explore the Pittsburgh Spur and Detroit Alternate (Section 1: Oberlin, OH to Sombra, ON). Maps are available from our Cyclosource store.
  • Take a day trip! Our day trip maps are geared toward casual riders on 10- to 30-mile loops or out-and-back roads and trails. We also welcome proposals from communities wishing to create Underground Railroad day trip maps for their area. Get more information.

Thanks to REI for their generous support of the
Underground Railroad Bicycle Route project.
