For the first time, Adventure Cycling is offering a leadership course for adults who want to take groups of kids on overnight bicycle adventures. Adventure Cycling has been fulfilling its mission by sharing the thrill and adventure of bicycle travel with cyclists for three decades. Our Pedal Pioneers Training Course takes this wealth of experience and wraps it into a three-day package that will impart a wealth of knowledge and know-how, laced with a heavy dose of fun and camaraderie—and offer continuing education credits, to boot.

This class is appropriate for both veteran and neophyte bicyclists with a strong desire to inspire the next generation to travel by bicycle. Whether you’re a high-school or middle-school teacher, a youth-group leader, or just an enthusiast who wants to make a difference in kids’ lives, this course will give you the tools you need to inspire dreams in kids and help them turn those dreams into reality.

Three days of demonstrations, role playing, lectures, and riding will hone your leadership skills and point you down the road to leading successful youth bicycle adventures. You’ll enjoy discussions about the dynamics involved in leading supported and self-contained tours, including such topics as recruiting participants and partners, route logistics, choosing equipment, and group riding techniques. You’ll also enjoy time spent in Missoula, one of the most beautiful mountain towns in the country (and home to Adventure Cycling Association’s world headquarters).

Our goal is to give you all of the tools you’ll need to successfully take a group of kids on the adventure of a lifetime. We welcome your participation, regardless of how you choose to use the knowledge you’ll acquire. Some attendees may have an interest in taking a group of kids on an overnight outing on their local rail trail; others will be looking to gain the skills for something a bit more ambitious, like leading a group of youngsters on a month-long tour. Whether you already have an established bike club to recruit from, or are just dreaming of getting kids on bikes, this course will provide the nuts-and-bolts knowledge needed to travel by bike with kids. It will also connect you with other current and aspiring youth leaders from around the country, and you’ll get a complimentary copy of our Pedal Pioneers: A Guide to Bicycle Travel with Kids, a resource that you can turn to in the future to refresh and enhance what you learn at this course.

Your instructors for the Pedal Pioneers Training Course are handpicked from the very best leaders in youth bicycle travel—a group of seasoned and dedicated adventure cyclists holding impressive resumes of cycling leadership experience and expertise, complemented with passionate dedication to the Adventure Cycling mission and to getting more kids into bike saddles.

Please join us for this first–of–its–kind training!
