The bicycle hides nothing

On this trip we will experience some the best mountain biking in the entire great American Southwest—which is to say in the world—as we enjoy a fully supported tour along the length of the famed Kokopelli’s Trail.

Likenesses of Kokopelli, the Hopi Indians’ flute-playing symbol of fertility, can be spotted throughout the Four Corners Region in paintings, on T-shirts, adorning necklaces, and in many other places. Since the 1990 creation of this unique desert trail, the hump-backed wanderer has become even more ubiquitous. The Colorado Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA), whose members developed the 140-mile-long trail with the BLM and other partners, chose to name their project after Kokopelli in deference to the Hopi and other early settlers of the Colorado Plateau, as well as to reflect the meandering, wandering nature of the trail itself. Kokopelli’s Trail is nothing less than a fat-tire national treasure, and it is fitting that riders come from across the globe to experience its rare pleasures.

Prior to setting out, we’ll warm up for our extended backcountry run by hitting a few of the trails in vicinity of Fruita, Colorado. The location of the Kokopelli Trail’s eastern terminus, Fruita is one of mountain biking’s hottest destinations in its own right. Then we’ll hit the trail—Kokopelli’s, that is, which we’ll stick to for a number of days. Although we’ll ride and camp in remote, rugged settings, the adventure will be supported and catered, which simply has to be the best of both worlds. Your traveling companions may be the only folks you’ll see all day.

Created by a continuous linking of two-wheel-drive roads, jeep paths, sandy singletrack, and slickrock trails through places like Bull and Yellow Jacket canyons, the trail courses around some of the most scenic country found in this part of the world. Geographical/scenic highlights include the maroon-colored shales of the Morrison Formation; the colorful sandstones of the Entrada Bluffs; the high Fisher Valley overlooking Onion Creek; the lofty La Sal Mountains; and the rugged Porcupine Rim Road, where we’ll zip past the trailhead for the ride on the technically demanding Porcupine Rim Trail.

We’ll establish a base camp near the Kokopelli Trail’s western terminus outside Moab, Utah. There we can polish off the tour by tackling the Slickrock Bike Trail or more of the mecca of mountain biking’s miles of trails, which range from tantalizing to terrifying (no one will force you to ride the latter)!

When we’ve had enough—or not—we’ll jump aboard a shuttle for the drive back to Fruita.
