This tool secures the lockring from turning by locking it to the dropout so that when the cranks are turned with the bike in low gear the pedaling force will actually break the lockring free. It is designed primarily for emergency use. The tool can be used in reverse to be able to install the lockring as well.

My friend Joe Griffin bought this item and asked me to review it.
I tested the tool in my workshop; it was purchased for a 1000 mile tour on the Northern Tier route. It is not as easy as I had hoped to use but with persistence I was able to remove my casette lockring using only this tool. Its attraction is its tiny size and light weight. I gave it a Very Good rating as it does as advertised; it allows removal of your casette without the usual large, heavy tools. |

I broke a spoke on a tour 2 years ago on the left side of the rear wheel.
I realized then, had it have been on the drive side, I would have been in deep stuff.
When I saw this tool I just had to have one. I tried it in a controled situation and know now that if I need to remove the cassette I can with little trouble.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to be truely self contained on a tour. |

Works as advertised for removal of the cassette lock ring without the need for a chain whip. This is very convenient while bike touring when the weight of a chain whip is not acceptable. The down side of the tool is on the re-installation of the lock ring since the tool is quite flimsy. You must be very careful not to twist it out of shape. Perhaps carrying the standard lock ring tool is a better way to go for installation - the Stein tool for removal and the regular lock ring tool for installation (with a small crescent wrench). It's still better than carrying a chain whip. This tool is a must-have for touring. |
