The book is by John Seigel Boettner. Six kids and their two teachers load up their trailers and pedal 5,000 miles, following Lewis and Clark from the White House to the Western Ocean. Stuffed animals atop their trailers and Jefferson Peace Medals to present in their panniers, they rediscover the history and majesty of America, are welcomed time and time again by kind strangers, and have the adventure of their lives. Hb. 441pg.

The Guide is by Adventure Cycling Association. Bicycle tours provide outstanding opportunities for youth to combine physical and mental challenges, hone social skills, learn about different regions of the world, and gain confidence and a sense of self-sufficiency through experiential learning. In five sections, an Introduction, and an exhaustive Appendix, Pedal Pioneers walks leaders through each stage of organizing a bicycle trip for groups of kids who can ride bicycles independently. Some of the Guide chapters include; Leaders and Participants, Route Planning, What to Take and How to Pack, Safety and Riding Techniques, Overnight Accommodations, Food and Hydration, Communications, and much more. (We do not discuss trailers, bike seats, or trail-a-bikes.) The hardcopy of the Guide comes packaged in a user-friendly binder with sample magazines, stickers, safety information, a discounted membership coupon, and more. The downloadable Guide is just the formatted version of the text without a binder or additional materials. 88 pgs.
