Tested and proved in virtually every endurance event on the planet, Sustained Energy's unique 7:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio, and it's neutral flavor is still the first choice of thousands of athletes. After about two hours of exercise you need to have some protein in your fuel or you will start to "cannibalize" or break down precious muscle tissue. So when your exercise foes beyond the range of Hammer Gel or HEED alone, Sustained Energy is ready to serve you, providing premium fuel complemented with specific nutrients that support enhanced fat utilization and lactic acid buffering. I really had no expectations with the flavor, as this is the Unflavored variety, so I have no complaints there.
I like to mix it up a bit with some HEED to handle the flavor department, which also succeeds in adding in some electrolytes.
Overall this stuff is great.
This pretty much takes care of the need to pack along gels and/or bars.
I've finished 100+ rides on this alone, and felt excellent afterward.

The flavor has a lot to be desired, so I suggest mixing in flavored HEED, Gatorade, or anything to make it less chalky, but it certainly gets you through a long day in the saddle.
I have found it most beneficial in cold weather riding, where a great deal of energy is spent on keeping the core temperature up, in addition to the efforts of riding.
In the warmer months, I tend to scale this down, and add more HEED or Endurolytes to the mix to make sure I'm retaining everything I drink. Overall, this is a great product, and I would love to see ACA carry Perpetuem, which I'm a huge fan of.
They released a caffeinated version of Perpetuem this year which is incredible. |
