From Minot to Fargo, the route follows state highways that carry very little traffic. Long, straight stretches are the norm. In broad terms, the terrain is a vast, open plain that slopes downward from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River. The altitude falls from about 1,500 feet at Minot, North Dakota, to less than 900 feet at the North Dakota/Minnesota state line. One point of interest is the town of Rugby, the geographical center of North America.
