Wilmington has heavy recreational traffic along the beach south to Fort Fisher and the ferry crossing the mouth of Cape Fear River. From Shalotte the terrain is essentially flat and follows two-lane roads through farm country and small towns. These conditions continue into South Carolina. The spur into Charleston has quite a bit of traffic on it. You'll pass several famous plantations. A narrow country bridge crosses the Savannah River into Georgia, where the route heads inland to skirt around Fort Stewart and Savannah. The terrain becomes slightly rolling. Statesboro access is easy and the section ends in downtown.

3 Stars Good route - dated information

As in all my experience with ACA maps, the routes are indispensible for great worry free, minimum traffic travel. However, this particular section needs verifying and updating. For instance, Panel #57 is in need of some fine-tuning, as the mileage seems to be off on the entire panel, from turn to turn. Also on Panel #57, there is a convenience store serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in Bethera that is not listed, yet they have been operating for 3 years. This is in an area with very little services and their addition is important. Perhaps more importantly, on Panel #55, the gas/convenience store listed on SR 261 west of Yauhannah has been closed for a number of years. This cost us a planned break, where we had to push on for another hour to get to Bucksport for a meal. On Panel #52 at Shallotte (north bound)the turn at mile 12 is not described correctly. It should read, "SR 172 makes a left and then in .01 miles turn right on Main Street/Business 17." The Shallotte turn description could be incorrect because of recent road construction. Overall, this is a vital section that just needs a bit of fine-tuning. Maybe in a perfect world we could convince South Carolina to adopt road shoulders.
