Adventure Cycling Association's unique non-profit mission is to inspire people of all ages to travel by bicycle. We believe that cycling offers amazing social, economic, and environmental benefits by connecting people with communities, landscapes, cultures, and with each other.
90% of Adventure Cycling's annual donations go directly into program work. In May 2009, Bicycle Retailer and Industry News explored how the major nonprofit bicycling organizations in the U.S. have utilized donations and specifically highlighted Adventure Cycling's exceptional value and fiscal responsibility.
If you support Adventure Cycling Association and its programs today, your donation will directly impact efforts to enrich lives and connect communities through bicycle travel.

Adventure Cycling is efficient
More than 90% of contributions from our members and donors go directly toward providing programs and services for cycling and bike travel. Approximately 10% goes toward administrative and fundraising costs an impressive statistic in the non-profit world. Adventure Cycling Association is a 501(c)3, making donations tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by IRS regulations.
Adventure Cycling gets results
Starting with the mapping of the 4,200 mile TransAmerica Trail in 1976, with member and donor support, we have developed the Adventure Cycling Route Network — 38,158 miles of bicycle routes across the U.S. and Canada, almost certainly the largest bike network in the world. The routes are short and long, attuned to the beginner or the veteran rider. They span urban, suburban, and rural landscapes, knitting together the U.S. and parts of Canada with a web of travel opportunities. Just reading the names of these routes evokes the rich qualities and heritage of America: Allegheny Mountains, Pacific Coast, Underground Railroad, Lewis & Clark, Utah Cliffs, Green Mountains (in Vermont), Tidewater Potomac, Great Divide, North Lakes and many more.
The Adventure Cycling Route Network connects thousands of communities, and cyclists who travel these routes provide tens of millions of dollars in economic development to these communities, typically in rural areas. Annually, thousands of riders travel our routes and spend money on services and supplies in the U.S. and Canada.
We've guided hundreds of thousands of people into bicycle travel people of all ages, backgrounds, and parts of the world. We developed Pedal Pioneers, the first-of-its-kind guide to youth bicycle travel, which helps adults lead young people on trips on two wheels.
Adventure Cycling impacts cycling nationwide
Adventure Cycling is the lead cycling nonprofit working to establish an official U.S. Bicycle Route System, that will likely be the largest official bike network on the planet. In creating this network, we join many other national and international initiatives around the world, including the National Cycle Network in Great Britain, whose director said: “If you build the right environment to attract…cyclists in large numbers, you also help to build social cohesion. You help with neighborhood renewal, you improve access for all, you extend the choice of healthy and active lifestyles to many, many more people and you reduce congestion, pollution and CO2 emissions, while building communities with people at their heart.”
Since 1976, Adventure Cycling has grown into the largest cycling membership organization on the continent, and is the only non-profit organization bringing the joys and benefits of bicycle travel to North America – but there is so much more that we hope to accomplish.
