JOIN THE DISCUSSION
Join our Discussion Forums and detail the best routes you know. Are there scenic and historic corridors at the local level that should be included? Are you a community that wants a U.S. Bike Route? As for cities, what are great urban and suburban routes that link the corridors (as directly as possible) to alternate transportation hubs and/or airports? You put it up and we’ll make sure the information gets to the decision makers.
JOIN A TEAM
If you want to help, join your state advocacy organization, bike advisory board or bike club and take up the cause. Voices united have strength and can get more done. These groups often have already established a relationship with the transportation sector. For groups you can join in your state, see the Cyclists’ Yellow Pages and search by state, or call your state bicycle and pedestrian coordinator and ask them with whom you should be working.
SUPPORT THE DECISION MAKERS
State transportation agencies are being stretched by today’s economy and with the upcoming stimulus money may need help to get projects on the ground. Contact your state bicycle and pedestrian coordinator and find out how your organization can serve. Be prepared to offer help in the following areas: planning the U.S. Bike Routes for your city, township, county, state or region; informing local jurisdictions of the benefits of the USBRS; documentation of the chosen U.S. Bike Routes for your area; mapping and/or sign placement.
Curious whether your state is interested in implementing U.S. Bicycle Routes? Check out our survey called Implementation Preparedness: Survey of State Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinators (PDF/88k). Don’t see your state listed? Don’t despair, information is coming in quickly and more states than those who are indicated in this report are actually already working on U.S. Bicycle Routes.
