NOMINATE A 2008
TRAIL ANGEL
The phrase Trail Angel refers to a generous individual or group encountered during a bicycle tour that makes the cyclotourist’s journey easier, or in some cases even possible, by helping the cyclist through an act of goodwill. Trail Angels have been kind to cyclists time and time again, sharing lodging, food, rides, and services.
The Trail Angel Award is named in honor of June Curry, the famous Cookie Lady of Afton, Virginia. June has been assisting cyclists on the TransAmerica Trail since 1976. To date, more than 11,000 touring cyclists have enjoyed the hospitality at her home in Virginia.
AWARDS HISTORY
2007 Toaster House hosts Nita Larronde and Don Kearney, and Pie-O-Neer Café owner Kathy Knapp from Pie Town, Colorado. Pie Town is a huge highlight on Adventure Cycling’s Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. View the news release.
2006 Gillian Hoggard from Colorado for being a huge highlight on our TransAmerica Bicycle Trail.
2005 The Monroeville Community Center of Monroeville, Indiana. For thirty years, they have provided complimentary lodging and services to traveling bicyclists. View the news release.
2004 Dave and Jo-An Martin of Dubois, Wyoming. The Martin’s home, just off the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail and the Great Divide route, has provided a resting place, copious amounts of food, and top-notch hospitality to hundreds of touring cyclists. View the news release.

Eligibility/Criteria
Any individual or group that went out of their way to do something special for a touring cyclist is eligible for nomination. A longstanding commitment to kindness is a plus. The act(s) of kindness does not need to have occurred in 2008 in order to qualify for nomination. You can re-nominate a past nominee that has not won an award.
How to Nominate
Anyone can nominate a deserving individual or group for the 2008 Trail Angel Award. Nominations must arrive at our office by September 30, 2008 in order to be considered for the 2008 award. Nomination forms are available online (see form below). Note that your nomination language may be used in Adventure Cycling Association’s materials.
Selection Process
The selection committee is comprised of Adventure Cycling Association staff members and Board of Directors. Only one individual or group will receive the award, while all nominations will be honored with a certificate and letter of appreciation.
Award Presentation
The location and date of the Trail Angel Award presentation will be determined after the winner is selected. Included will be a wall mount plaque, as well as write-ups in Adventure Cyclist magazine; Bike Bits bi-weekly e-newsletter, a nationally distributed news release; and on our website.

- Your information. Your name and contact information (post address, email address, and phone number).
- Your nominee’s information. Name of business or organization if applicable, name of individuals most involved, and contact information (post address, email address, and phone number). Include website if applicable.
- Explain why you think this person or group should receive the Trail Angel Award. This explanation must be at least 200 words. Please provide specific examples and time frames. Note that your nomination language may be used in Adventure Cycling Association’s materials. Photographs and other supporting materials can be mailed, but will not be returned.
