Trail Angel Award Nominations

ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR 2005 TRAIL ANGEL AWARD
MISSOULA, Mont., May 2, 2005-Adventure Cycling Association is currently seeking nominations for the 2005 June Curry Trail Angel Award.  The phrase Trail Angel refers to a generous individual or group encountered during a bicycle tour that makes the cyclotourstÕs journey easier, or in some cases even possible, by helping the cyclist as a form of goodwill.  Any individual or group that went out of their way to do something special for a cyclotourist, even if it was a one-time occurrence, is eligible for nomination.  Nominations will be accepted until September 30, 2005 by visiting www.adventurecycling.org/outreach/awards, emailing awards@adventurecycling.org, or by calling 800-755-2453 and requesting a nomination form by mail or fax.

Adventure Cycling began this awards program to recognize the contributions made by individuals and organizations in America who promote bicycle touring and improve conditions for bicycle tourists.  The award is named in honor of June Curry, the famous Cookie Lady of Afton, Virginia.  June has been assisting cyclists on the TransAmerica Trail since 1976.  To date, more than 11,000 touring cyclist have enjoyed the hospitality at her home in Virginia.  June is a true Trail Angel and in 2003, she was the first recipient of this award.  In 2004, Dave and Jo-An Martin of Dubois, Wyoming were the winners of the second annual June Curry Trail Angel Award.  The MartinÕs home is just off the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail and the Great Divide route providing a resting place, copious amount of food, and top-notch hospitality to hundreds of touring cyclists.

"Sometimes help comes in the form of a ride into town during a storm and sometimes in the form of a warm shower and a soft bed, but every time it is appreciated and this award is our organizationÕs way of saying a big, collective 'THANK YOU,'" said Adventure Cycling Association Executive Director Jim Sayer.

Any Adventure Cycling member can nominate one deserving person or group for the 2005 Trail Angel Award.  To make a nomination, submit your name and contact information, plus the name, location, and contact information for the person you want to nominate, and a 100 to 300-word explanation of why you think this person or group should win the 2005 Trail Angel Award.  Nominations will be accepted until September 30, 2005 by visiting www.adventurecycling.org/outreach/awards, emailing awards@adventurecycling.org, or by calling 800-755-2453 and requesting a nomination form by mail or fax.
