The bicycle hides nothing
and threatens nothing.
It is what it does,
its form is its function.

Bicycle Travel — What's the Story?

Below you will find a smattering of timely, relevant bicycle travel story ideas. These are broad, interconnected topics ripe for topical or regional spin.

Please direct media inquiries to our media director, Winona Bateman, at or (406) 721-1776, ext 219.

Bicycle Travel is Growing: While this is difficult to measure exactly (many people just grab a map and go), in the last 10 years we’ve seen a 19% growth in our membership, 48% growth in map sales, and charitable donations have tripled. Our Adventure Cycling Route Network has grown to 40,974 miles because of this support, making it one of the largest cycling route networks in the world! In the last ten years, we've also seen the number of tour-operators worldwide double (based on submissions to our Cyclists' Yellow Pages). Read our news release, "2011 Caps Decade of Growth for Adventure Cycling Association."

Economic Impact of Bicycle Travel: Bicycle travel is becoming an increasingly visible part of the adventure travel market, which, according to a recent study (PDF) issued by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, generates $89 billion annually. Read about 10 indicators that bicycle travel is blooming!

There are lots of great stories about how small communities are seeing the economic benefits of bicycle tourists. If fact for some, it's good enough that some are investing in cyclist-only (or -friendly) lodging. and attracting other bicycle-related businesses to their communities! Read about Twin Bridges, MT and Farmington, MO.

The New Road Trip: Gas & oil prices remain unpredictable and the planet is a bit hot under the collar, but luckily there is really no need to sacrifice one's wanderlust. Take the new road trip -- see the country by bicycle. There are lots of potential angles to this one: eco-friendly vacations, affordable family trips (our family-friendly tours have been selling like hotcakes), or hardcore bike adventure (you can drive 3,000 miles, but can you bike them?), among others. With well-placed regional spin, this particular story will grab your readers and viewers as incredibly relevant, timely, and inspiring — we don't have to give things up — just do them differently!
