GIS Specialist Joins Adventure Cycling’s Routes and Mapping Department - Kevin McManigal will lead integration of current maps program with GIS technology
Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association welcomes cartographer and GIS specialist, Kevin McManigal, to their routes and mapping department. Kevin’s expertise will be invaluable to Adventure Cycling’s efforts to integrate GIS technology into their existing bicycle tour map program.
“Kevin’s GIS expertise and adventurous spirit fits beautifully with our ever-evolving maps program and our vibrant workplace,” says Carla Majernik, routes and mapping director. “We are lucky to have him with us.”
Kevin McManigal came to Adventure Cycling from Switzerland, where he ran a freelance cartography business, Orange Peel Cartographic. “I enjoyed the flexibility of working from home, but when I got the opportunity to work for a national nonprofit promoting bike travel, combined with a chance to live in Big Sky Country, I jumped at the chance!” says Kevin. His background in adventure guiding was a good fit with the association, while his GIS awards and experience pushed him to the top of the candidate list.
In college, at Humboldt State University (HSU), Kevin was known for his high caliber work and academic achievements, including first place papers with the California Geography Society and the HSU Academic Excellence Award. After graduating in 2006 with a Geography degree and a Certificate in GIS, Kevin worked on mapping projects with the North Coast Open Studios and the Northern California Wintu Tribe. With all his work, Kevin strives to create visually compelling cartographic products that invite the user to absorb the information being conveyed. “I love the fact that a map can be both beautiful and utilitarian,” says Kevin.
