hello Missoula... we have a walkway..

the NY state park Walkway Over The Hudson opened to the public at 3:00 PM local time on Saturday - on Sunday there was a ride acros the walkway and...
today Tuesday 10-06-09 I saw the first long dist touring cyclist using the new Hudson River x ing - he was from France!

You can cross over on the George Washington Bridge.

Also, I've seen cyclists go across the Bear Mountain Bridge though I thought that wasn't allowed but I'd check that out too..

It looks like the Bear Mountain Bridge is run by a different organization. It has a walkway so it seems logical that you could cross on your bike even if you had to walk it. There is contact information at the bottom of the page below:

This is a very good website for hudson valley cycling.  I must be thinking of another bridge, but the website states that the BMB is legal...   Also the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge..

Do not try the Tappen Zee though!  :-)

My excuse for not knowing the geography is 'cos I am in UK but does this new crossing over the Hudson link up with the ACA route?  Trying to sort out the best ways along Atlantic Coast (have ordered the ACA maps) but like to deviate if something else grabs me.

Tony, I know the Mid Hudson via the ACA is accessed by going through Lloyd to a small strip mall just west of the MH bridge, then a red light that goes across Rt 44/55 to a small street leading to a park (forget the name, I'm sure it can be google mapped) and then that park gives pedestrians and cyclists access to the walkway on the north side of the bridge (the bridge goes East-West).. then after that, the ACA route puts you though a commercial area of Poughkeepsie as it snakes you to RT 9W(?) which goes north towards Hyde Park, Staatsburg and eventually Rhinebeck.

So just by knowing that the RR bridge is pretty close to the MH bridge, I would imagine it would easily hook up with the ACA coastal route.  I will try to look into this further for you. (I have a non-touring friend who lives in Lloyd).. I have yet to have the time to check out the bridge myself though it's on a list of things to do..

The MH bridge is accessed via the ACA route via Haviland Rd, which you can see in the link above.

So it should definitely be accessible from the ACA route which uses Haviland Road...

Poughkeepsie side.... Parker street, according to google is also Rt 9G, and it looks likes in the commercial district of Poughkeepsie so if you just make your way over to Rt 9, Rt 9 is the ACA route all the way up to Rhineback before it heads east.

I think the only concern here if you want to make your way back to Rt 9 is you have to stay north of Rt 9 and Delafield Road. Rt 9 south of Delafield is a divided highway, no shoulder and should not be ridden on a bike.  So if you make your way back from Parker street, just make sure you head north a bit to avoid Rt 9 south of Delafield. Rt 9 has a bike lane but is very trafficky especially since it goes by a mall like place right as you enter Rt 9 from Delafield.

I am going to have to talk to the ACA, they probably should reroute the route over the new bridge, although I've heard from sources that it wont be plowed in winter.. but then again, I doubt many folks would use it during winter and those that will have no problem with snow. :-)
