The U.S. Bicycle Route sign can be found in the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
U.S. Bike Routes are not required to be signed; however, state Departments of Transportation (DOT) and local road agencies along with state partners are encouraged to provide signs and markings for the routes.
 This black on white version (left -- click image to enlarge) of the M1-9 U.S. Bicycle Route sign is the one currently in the 2009 edition of the MUTCD. The earlier version of the sign, which is still found on many roads across the U.S., has the number on top, bicycle on the bottom.
 The white on green version of the M1-9 sign (right -- click image to enlarge) has been designed and endorsed by the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD) to replace the older black and white version, and was submitted to FHWA in 2009. However, FHWA has not yet taken any formal action to approve this sign for use.
A state that is ready to sign U.S. Bike Routes approved by AASHTO may use the current black/white USBR sign, or can request an Interim Approval of the new green/white revised sign, in accordance with Section 1A.10 of the MUTCD, referencing the NCUTCD proposal (Word doc).
