2011 CAPS DECADE OF GROWTH FOR ADVENTURE CYCLING ASSOCIATION

ADVENTURE CYCLING AWARDED $100,000 IN GRANTS FOR BICYCLE PROGRAM WORK
October 4, 2011, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association, North America’s largest cycling membership organization, announced the receipt of four new grants totaling $100,000 to support its efforts to create what will be the world’s largest official bicycle network: the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS). The grants came from a number of prominent foundations and a leading cycling business: $45,000 from the Tawani Foundation; $30,000 from the SRAM Cycling Fund; $15,000 from the Surdna Foundation; and $10,000 from the Lazar Foundation. The grants from Tawani, Surdna, and Lazar focus on the U.S. Bicycle Route System. The grant from SRAM will support Adventure Cycling’s work on the USBRS, as well as its efforts to help understand and organize the bike-travel industry. More.
NEW SIERRA CASCADES BICYCLE ROUTE GROWS TOURISM AND COOPERATION ON HIGHWAY 89
July 19, 2011, Missoula, Mont. — Just over a year ago, Adventure Cycling Association announced the official release of its new Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route, a 2,389-mile road-based cycling route that runs from Sumas, Washington, to Tecate, California. The Mt. Shasta to Truckee, California, section of the route uses State Highway 89 and guides bicycle tourists through small and medium-sized communities along this corridor, including McCloud, Chester, and Quincy. Since publishing the maps for the route in April 2010, Adventure Cycling has sold over 750 maps for the Mt. Shasta to Truckee section alone. More.

May 11, 2011, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association and the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) today announced that AASHTO’s Special Committee on U.S. Route Numbering has approved six new U.S. Bicycle Routes (USBR): USBR 1 in Maine and New Hampshire, USBR 20 in Michigan, and USBR 8, 95, 97, and 87 in Alaska — the first official U.S. Bicycle Routes to be established since 1982. January 18, 2011, Missoula, Mont. — In 2010 big gains were made in Adventure Cycling Association's life member program, with 48 new life members joining the organization, a 37% increase over 2009. While the total life members joining in a year is a relatively small number compared to the nearly 45,000 other memberships in the organization, life membership is a significant commitment, and one more and more members seem willing to make, despite the economy. REI GRANTS $20,000 FOR NEW ALTERNATE ON UNDERGROUND RAILROAD BICYCLE ROUTE
June 17, 2010, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association announced today that it will receive a $20,000 grant from REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), a retail co-op providing quality outdoor gear and clothing, to create a new alternate route off its existing 2,100-mile Underground Railroad Bicycle Route (UGRR). MOUNTAIN BIKING’S GREATEST RACE KICKS OFF TODAY
June 11, 2010, Missoula, Mont. — Mountain biking's greatest race — and one of the toughest competitions in all of sport — the third annual Tour Divide kicks off this morning at 9 a.m. in Banff, Alberta. Competitors will race over 2,700 miles down the spine of the Rocky Mountains along Adventure Cycling Association's Great Divide Mountain Bike Route from Banff to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. Pedaling the entire distance to the Mexican border along primarily dirt roads, without any outside assistance, riders will climb nearly 200,000 vertical feet from start to finish. In classic touring tradition, racers carry everything they need — food, water, shelter — on their bikes and backs, with refueling stops in small-town stores along the way. ADVENTURE CYCLING ASSOCIATION STANDS STRONG THROUGH STORMY 2009
November 12, 2009, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association — North America’s largest membership cycling organization — today reported strong income numbers for FY09 (ending September 30) with overall growth in its membership, sales, development, and tours programs. Surprisingly, in a year where many tour companies suffered, the big star for Adventure Cycling was its guided cycling tours. Total tours participants were up 9% over FY08, with total tours revenue increasing 23%. The Association offers more than 40 cycling tours each year, including supported trips, self-contained tours, and educational trips such as its unique Intro to Road Touring course.

June 24, 2009, Missoula, Mont. — Adventure Cycling Association was recently presented with a $10,000 check from Recreational Equipment, Inc (REI) at Adventure Cycling’s headquarters at 150 E. Pine Street in Missoula, Montana. The REI funds will support on-going mapping and production work for the Association’s newest route — the Sierra Cascades Bicycle Route. A 2,400-mile road-based journey, the route will stretch from Sumas, Washington, at the Canadian-Washington State border, through the Cascade Range into Oregon, southward through the Sierra Nevada Range in California and Nevada, to the Tehachapi and San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California, ending in Tecate, California, at the Mexican border. April 13, 2009, Missoula, Mont. Adventure Cycling Association today announced that its world-renowned cycling maps will now be produced using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. Kevin McManigal, Adventure Cycling’s GIS specialist, and cartographer Casey Greene recently completed the conversion of one map section of the Association’s Great Parks South Bicycle Route from a strictly illustration software-based format to a GIS and illustration software-based map. Announced last night at the 19th National Trails Symposium in Little Rock, Arkansas, this award recognizes the unique partnership forged between Adventure Cycling Association and the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Minority Health to create a 2,028-mile bicycle route memorializing the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses by which freedom seekers attempted to escape slavery before and during the Civil War. The Underground Railroad Bicycle Route passes points of interest and historic sites from Mobile, Alabama, a busy port for slavery during the pre-civil war era, north to Owen Sound, Ontario, a town founded by free blacks in 1857.
